About the Author

Laura Monagan
In 1986, when I was twenty-eight years old, an opportunity presented itself: a chance to walk across America. I couldn't resist the challenge, the adventure, and the chance to make a strong statement against the nuclear arms race. The Great Peace March was a unique chapter in the history of nuclear protest. A Strange Place Called Home is my memoir of the people, the events, the places, the whole amazing experience. My wish is to bring this little known gem of a demonstration to light and let it shine for others to see.

What Writers Say About: A Strange Place Called Home

“If you haven't read A Strange Place Called Home yet, you have a treat in store. I could not put it down. It is the story of self discovery about what peace really means, inwardly and outwardly. We all long for peace, but how do we get there? One step at a time, says Laura Monagan. This is a fabulous book! Thrilling!”

- Jane Hurst, author of: The Nichiren Shoshu Soka Gakkai in America: The Ethos of a New Religious Movement

"What happens when you take an ordinary -- well, actually, rather extraordinary -- young woman with a penchant for singing and songwriting, and send her on a 9 month step by step journey on foot across the USA with a group of 600 other peace activists? A Strange Place Called Home answers this, and many other questions, with humor, charm, and panache, and a rare eye for the unexpected..."

- Sean Murphy, author of Hemingway Award winning novel, The Hope Valley Hubcap King

Page View Milestone

A Strange Place Called Home has now received over 20,000 page views since it was launched. Recent page views come primarily from the US, but also from Canada, France, Germany, and the UK. Interpreting blog stats is tricky. One never knows if a page view was intentional or just a lost surfer passing through on his way to another wave. Nevertheless, it's gratifying to know that every day a few new readers are finding their way to the site. (09 June 2015)

The events depicted in this blog actually happened. I have recorded them to the best of my ability. To protect the privacy of those about whom I have written, I have changed the names of all but the most public figures. The only exceptions are those whose colorful nicknames were an integral expression of the Great Peace March. In those cases, I have taken other measures to protect their identities. Any other reference to actual people living or deceased is purely coincidental.
